Enbridge Line 3 pipeline: Joint statement

“The completion of Enbridge’s Line 3 replacement is a significant milestone for Alberta, Canada and all of North America. It’s fantastic news for our province’s economic recovery.

“The current capacity of the Mainline is approximately 2.9 million barrels per day. After Line 3 is in service, it will be able to transport approximately 3.2 million barrels per day out of Western Canada.

“Alberta has been, and will continue to be, a stable, secure and responsible energy supplier to the U.S. – a relationship that is particularly important as our economies recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Line 3 is also a big part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, a bold plan to diversify the economy and create jobs. Our government will continue to fight for all projects that help bring our oil to market because we owe it to Albertans to get full value for our resources.

“The world needs more of Alberta’s safe, reliable and responsible energy and, through projects like this, we will be able to deliver it.”Jason Kenney, Premier

“The Enbridge Line 3 replacement line becoming operational is terrific news for the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who work in the energy sector and rely on pipeline capacity to get their product to market.

“Pipelines remain the safest and most efficient way to transport oil and, ultimately, the Line 3 replacement project is about safety and integrity. The project replaced an aging pipeline with a new pipeline equipped with state-of-the-art technology and safety measures to protect the environment.

“This pipeline is also the result of rigorous regulatory processes in both Canada and the United States. It took nearly seven years of planning and involved unprecedented levels of community engagement and participation, on both sides of the border, during its construction – especially with Indigenous communities and businesses. In fact, more than 1,100 Indigenous men and women worked on its construction and it generated more than $400 million in Indigenous economic benefits.

“We look forward to seeing the positive impact Line 3 has on this important industry and will continue to stand up for Alberta’s energy sector and all of its workers.”Sonya Savage, Minister of Energy
