Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month: Associate Minister Issik

“September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Every year across the province, hundreds of women from all backgrounds receive the devastating news that they have some form of ovarian cancer. My thoughts are with all these brave women, and also with their families and friends who are by their side on this difficult journey.

“Ovarian cancer is the tenth most common cancer among women in Alberta. As with all forms of cancer, outcomes can be improved through early detection. Early detection provides an opportunity for more treatment options.

“This September, I’m asking every Albertan to help raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer with every woman you know and love, and strongly encourage them to discuss any concerns with their health-care provider.

“Many symptoms of ovarian cancer can easily be dismissed as coming from other less serious causes. But, if symptoms such as constant bloating, eating difficulties, extreme fatigue, urinary problems or abdominal pain persist for two weeks, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

“Thank you to all of Alberta’s oncologists, nurses, staff and home care workers who are there to assist our loved ones and their families who are battling any form of cancer.”
