Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Minister Luan

“Since 1999, we have recognized International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day on the ninth day of the ninth month. In recognition of this day, Alberta’s government is declaring Sept. 9, 2021, as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day in Alberta.

“FASD has significant impact on the lives of individuals, families, caregivers and communities, yet it is preventable. Approximately four per cent of Canadians are living with FASD – nearly 1.5 million people – including approximately 174,000 in Alberta.

“International FASD Day reminds us that it’s best for women to abstain from alcohol during the nine months of pregnancy and that we all play a role in helping expectant mothers have healthy pregnancies.

“A healthy baby is not just a mother’s responsibility. The support of her partner, family, friends and the community goes a long way in supporting healthy pregnancies and families. Together, with the 12 FASD Service Networks across Alberta, we will continue to raise awareness to improve FASD prevention, diagnosis and supports for individuals with the disorder. Alberta’s government has also partnered with the Canada FASD Research Network and Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis to develop free online FASD training courses. These courses are available at estore.canfasd.ca for anyone interested in learning more about this developmental disability.

“I encourage everyone to join a virtual event happening across the province. Service Networks will host the events to recognize FASD Awareness Day.

“I know the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for all Albertans, especially for those with FASD. Thank you to the many organizations and individuals who work tirelessly every day to support some of our province’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Please join us in recognizing International FASD Awareness Day and increasing awareness of FASD in Alberta.”
