World Hepatitis Day: Minister Shandro

“July 28 is World Hepatitis Day. This year’s theme is ‘Hepatitis Can’t Wait. Don’t wait, get tested. Treatment could save your life.’

“Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a viral infection. There are five main types of hepatitis, all of which have a serious effect upon this vital organ. Two types are usually acquired through contaminated food or water, while the other types are generally acquired through bodily fluids, such as blood.

“While new treatments are highly effective, individuals are often unaware they have this disease, as they may not experience symptoms. Tragically, a person dies every 30 seconds from a hepatitis-related illness.

“I encourage all Albertans to get the facts about hepatitis, including information about risk factors. If you are travelling, consider getting vaccinated for hepatitis A and B. Personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes and razors should not be shared, instruments used in personal service establishments must be sterilized and if you use drugs, equipment should not be reused or shared. To find out if you might be at risk or for information about testing, visit myhealth.aberta.ca or speak with your health-care professional.

“Today, as we recognize World Hepatitis Day, let’s increase awareness of viral hepatitis. Hepatitis is preventable and treatable and no one should be lost to it. Together, we can work toward a future where hepatitis is eliminated.”
